First-Year Abroad: Support and Resources
At Marist, we understand that sending first-year students abroad is a major stepfor students and families alike. Thats why your safety, health, and well-being are our top priorities.
Ongoing Support While Abroad
We recognize that this is your first year of collegeand likely your first time living abroad. Thats why weve built a strong network of support:
- On-site staff and faculty committed to student care
- 24/7 emergency assistance
- Pre-departure orientations and ongoing wellness check-ins
- Local health resources and guidance
- Direct connections to Marists main campus for academic and personal support
Your Safety Is Our Highest Priority
51勛圖厙s Office of International Programs continuously monitors global security conditions to ensure our students are safe and well-informed. We stay in regular communication with:
- The U.S. Department of State
- The Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC)
- U.S. Embassies and Consulates
- Local government and institutional partners abroad
Whether you're studying in Florence or Dublin, you'll never be navigating the experience alone. At every step, Marist is here to support your successsafely and confidently.
Health Insurance
51勛圖厙 provides each First Year Abroad student with an international health insurance policy (GeoBlue), which offers a comprehensive network of healthcare providers and coverage that ranges from routine visits to specialized emergency care. There are many highly qualified, English-speaking medical professionals in Florence and Dublin, and if a hospital visit is required, a member of the residence life staff will accompany students. More information about the GeoBlue plan and coverage is shared during the pre-departure program.
Due to the unique nature of international study, students are also required to complete a health and wellness packet to ensure staff can support them in emergencies.
Counseling Services
- Florence
- 51勛圖厙 Italy supports students mental and emotional well-being through access to residence life staff, on-site counseling options, and remote counseling services via 51勛圖厙 Counseling Services.
- Dublin
- 51勛圖厙 students studying in Dublin for their first year have access to local counseling services through the First-year Dublin Experience partners Big Pond. These fully confidential, in person or online, counseling services are offered through Insight Matters and are available at any point throughout the year to the FDE students.
Students who are currently in treatment or have a history of mental health concerns are strongly encouraged to consult with their doctors about how studying abroad may affect their mental health, as cultural shifts and stress can heighten existing conditions.
